A small journey into the gardens of history

One rainy Moscow evening in the end of the year 2000 Sergey had a dream. It was an English dream, or a dream in English. When he woke up, great deeds awaited his pleasure. The pleasure of starting the Moscow English Club. His ideas awoke Slava, and that's how the legend about the Moscow English Conversation Club begins...

Since autumn 2000 people gathered once a week and chatted in English. In the beginning they used to gather at the marketing club of the hotel Moskva (it was a nice place with a view to the Red Square). After this club ceased to exist we gathered each Saturday in other Moscow night clubs like PROPAGANDA, CHINESE PILOT DZHAO DA (Kitaiskii Lyotchik) or negotiated other possible places through the internet.

On May 22nd, 2001, the club got its second birth. We started to gather twice a week on a regular basis at DELIFRANCE cafe (Tchaikovsky Concert Hall near Mayakovskaya metro station).

In autumn 2001 the Club moved to its own premises at Nikitskii pereulok, 4. Meanwhile in 2003 the difficult times began. We had to seek for a new premises. In the end, after all hazards of nomadic clubbing we anchored at Strastnoy boulevard, 6/2. Here we are getting together now.

The club is developing rapidly. Now 100-150 people on the average come to each meeting, including native speakers. We discuss a wide range of issues, exchange impressions about one's journeys, English movies, books, arts, politics, and everyday life. The spirit of the Club has helped its members to find not only a lovely conversation but also new friends. We intend to keep up our development: we are still searching for new places, new people, new friends, new forms of activities with the use of English language. So we established contacts with the Library of Foreign Literature, with Moscow Department of the English Speaking Union.

We have initiated a number of joint activities, such as holidays, festivals, cultural events, lectures and debates in the English language. If you meet a person in Moscow speaking English fluently - be sure, he is a member of this club. Shall it go further? Who knows. We expect more parties, picnics, birthdays, concerts...
